Dr. David Frawley Vedacharya

The book Awakened Sleep by Suhas Kshirsagar and Sheila Patel is one of the most important, innovative, and detailed books on Ayurveda in recent years. Both authors are Ayurvedic doctors with years of experience teaching and practicing Ayurveda. Awakened Sleep reveals the key to higher consciousness in Yoga and deeper healing of the heart, brain and nervous system in Ayurveda. This is very helpful in our digital era of disrupted sleep, weak vitality and psychological disturbances. The special practices taught in the book can bring you greater longevity, immunity, well-being and harmony for body and mind from a time-tested naturalistic and yogic perspective. Most notable is the practical and interactive approach of the book providing clear guidance for the reader in every chapter on how to adapt these teachings in our daily lives. An insightful new addition to global Ayurveda today.

Dr. Michael Breus PhD

As a clinical psychologist specializing in sleep disorders, I've seen the limitations of treating sleep purely as a medical condition. In 'Awakened Sleep,' Drs. Kshirsagar and Patel bridge ancient Ayurvedic wisdom with cutting-edge sleep science, offering a perspective on restful sleep that's been missing from our conventional approach. What impresses me most is their practical dosha-based protocols acknowledge what I've long advocated - that sleep solutions must be personalized to the individual. This book addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of sleep in ways I find both scientifically and clinically valuable. It's a great approach and I learned a lot.

Your answers should be based on your general sleep patterns throughout most of your life, not necessarily how your sleep is right now.

This assessment is meant to help you understand your prakruti (natural constitution).

Give yourself a score of 1 for all “yes” answers, and 0 for all “no” answers.

Each of us contains all three doshas in varying proportions, you’ll likely have a final number for each section but pay attention to the area with the highest score to determine your primary sleep type.

You may have two scores that are more or less equal, which is not unusual, as many people have two dominant doshas.

Dr. Sheila Patel

MD

Dr. Sheila Patel (MD) is a board-certified family physician who is passionate about bringing holistic healing practices into the Western medical system. After earning her MD at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, she completed her residency in family medicine at Ventura County Medical Center in California. For more than a decade, she practiced full-spectrum family medicine (including prenatal care and deliveries, ER coverage, inpatient and outpatient care, and end-of-life care). She practiced in small communities, first in Southeast Alaska and then in rural Wisconsin, which allowed her to truly know her patients. It was her patients who inspired her to continually learn, look for answers, and find new tools for healing. This led her to pursue education and training in other healing systems, including Ayurvedic medicine. She currently maintains an outpatient primary care practice in Southern California, where she combines the wisdom of ancient healing traditions with the tools of modern medicine to help patients heal from a variety of acute and chronic conditions. She is aware firsthand of the challenges that patients face in the modern world and is passionate about teaching patients practices to manage stress, get restful and rejuvenative sleep, prevent chronic disease through healthy lifestyle, feel joyful and purposeful, and truly thrive in their lives.
